It’s true, January really is a busy time for divorces.
This week, dozens of people have been coming to us for help in getting a divorce.
It’s a sad situation, but it’s a situation in which people really appreciate the expertise that we can offer as Newark’s only FMC accredited mediator and as a solicitor with more than 30 years’ experience.
But why do so many people decide to divorce in January?
It isn’t a myth; we’ve already had as many enquiries in the last week as we can get in a whole month.
In my previous blog, I explored some of the reasons why this might be the case, and today I’ve been speaking to Mark Dennison on BBC Radio Nottingham about this too.
You can listen to my chat with Mark here:
In my discussion, I explained how important communication is when trying to reach the best outcome.
This can be difficult since a lack of communication might be one of the reasons why a relationship broke down in the first place.
I always encourage my clients to engage in mediation; it’s a much more positive process than taking divorces to court and I find it’s much more likely achieve an outcome that both sides will be happy with.
I told Mark that it’s important for you take your time before making decisions which you’ll have to live with forever.
Talk to friends and family, and avoid making decisions in the heat of a moment because once things are set in motion, it’s very hard to change course.
We’re ready and willing to help you if you need advice on your options, if you want to start divorce proceedings or if you want help with any other kind of separation.
